The night before Ryan said he would arrive with an open mind. Past Ryan was an idiot though. Present Ryan knew this, which is why he was already in a bad mood. He knew that he too would soon become past Ryan - and that Ryan wasn’t just an idiot, he was a dick.
They say knowledge is power, but no expectations had a pretty powerful punch. And that's exactly what he had of Henry. Henry had one of those faces that Ryan wanted to low-expectation right on the nose.
'Hey Ryan, running late? That's ok. Nice to meet you.'
Low. Expectations.
Ok, it didn't punch hard enough. But the lack of smile acknowledging his shit pass-ag joke did the trick.
'Just need to get your pass at security - and get your kit scanned before we grab you a hot wet.'
I've seen this plenty of times before - pretty sure I've been there myself. This cringe overdoing it with the lingo happens when you want to fit in. Either when you initially join or when you've left and you're speaking to someone currently serving. You want to be seen as "one of them". The irony is that the harder they try, the more ostracised they make themselves. Henry was one of the worst ones though. Most people quickly get over being a 'hat' and find their own skin. Henry, however, never did. He went straight from hat to bellend - having spent all of 5 minutes in the military. Eugh. Military - sorry, too much credit. RAF - Air Cadets. And not even one that ever went in the air!
