I never tell them, but after the first date I can tell how many books she reads.
I certainly don’t tell them that if it’s less than 10 a year, there won’t be a second date.
Some think this is ridiculous, shallow even, but people that read have a worldliness about them that others don’t.
I put it down to the worlds they explore, the things they get to experience in these worlds, and the lessons they learn in each.
Our starters arrived and the conversation was flowing – this time I didn’t have to guess, she told me. 52 was her goal this year.
And I knew she was being modest when she said she was on track. It was October and I could tell she’d already surpassed that.
There was an instant connection with this girl. Was this love at first sight? It had to be.
It can’t just be about books, I hoped. She was intelligent, a PhD student – and she was gorgeous. Way out of my league. What if she had the same thing about books but I didn’t meet her quota?
The panic set in. I was out of my depth.
